The 3D models coming from the automotive and aerospace industries are an accurate representation of the finished article detailed down to the last bolt washer and nut. In the AEC industry It’s not possible to model to a similar level of detail due to the constraints of time and cost.

Although we are seeing accurate architectural, structural and MEP models, the furniture, fixtures and equipment (FFE) are rarely, if ever, modelled as 3D objects. Generally speaking this important set of information is ignored, because even on a medium sized project the FFE assets can be counted in the tens of thousands.

Now it’s possible to enrich BIM models with detailed information that will support the Fit-Out process and help building contractors in the task of purchasing, installing and commissioning FFE.

eRDS Cloud & Field software includes several plugins and the tools to make model enrichment painless and efficient. Once they have been defined, all the finishes, fittings, M&E components and specs for every room in the building are written to the BIM models as Revit parameters or IFC values. Once written to the model new possibilities arise because the information is available to all other BIM applications including free or paid-for viewers, and field applications for progress monitoring and quality control.
